Theory Component of Skilled Trades
To ensure students learn the curriculum objectives of Skilled Trades 1201. Each group will be required to develop a web site that demonstrates how they did their project. Each group will be required to define terms and explain important concepts in each trade. (59 marks)
1. Use the Internet or camera to find a picture of each of the following drywall tools (1 mark each for total of 7 marks).
A. Drywall Saw
B. Drywall T-Square
C. Drywall Lift
D. Drywall Tape
E. Drywall Mesh
2. Give a brief description of the following types of drywall and where it is used (2 marks each for total of 6 marks).
a. Drywall
b. Greenboard
c. Concrete backerboard
3. Explain how to estimate materials for dry walling (3 points for a total of 3 Marks).
4. Explain how to layout and cut drywall using a utility knife (3 points for a total of 3 Marks).
5. Explain how to hang drywall on a wall. Why do you hang drywall on the ceiling before the walls (3 points for a total of 3 Marks)?
6. Define concepts (1 mark each for total of 4 marks):
a. Factory Edge
b. Lifter
c. Butt joint
d. second and third coats spread
7. What is corner bead used for? Use pictures and/or video used in the shop of how you installed it? (3 marks)
8. Use pictures and/or video used in the shop to explain the steps involved in applying plaster to walls. Be sure to give details related to the different types of drywall knives, the sanding required at each stage, and include references to terms like factory edge and butt joint. Zero marks will be given for a link or copy and paste from a webpage. It has to be in your own words. Step-by-step point form may be easiest (12 marks).
