Power and Energy 3201
Assignment for Alternative Energy
All students are responsible to bring their own paper and pencil to class. They are required to keep their own material in their own locker. If they lose their material then they are responsible to start the assignment over. Again, they are responsible for their own material.
Efficient Houses
Draw a blueprint for an efficient house (blueprint is worth 10 marks for neatness)
Include each of the following in your efficient house blueprint:
Create a report to convert your home to include Alternative Energy Sources:
Solar Panel
· Photovoltaic cells
· electric field
· s phosphorous and boron Impurities
· N-type and p-type
Explain in great detail the four considerations and/or degrees that must be calculated when setting up the solar panel. (4 marks)
Explain the different layouts of designs (series and parallel) and the results for each design. (6 marks)
Wind Power
1. Research how tidal power is created (10 marks)
2. Provide examples of tidal energy (3 marks)
3. Would tidal energy be effective in Newfoundland and Labrador and why? (3 marks)
Renewable Energy
Make a poster or brochure on the FACTS regarding renewable energy. Provide 10 facts at a minimum (10 marks).

Efficient Houses
Draw a blueprint for an efficient house (blueprint is worth 10 marks for neatness)
Include each of the following in your efficient house blueprint:
- Research type and amount of insulation in each wall, attic, crawl space, and basement etc. (8 marks)
- Research 4 types of heating system (include all types of heat used in your house) (4 mark)
- Research types of hot water tanks (2 mark)
- Research and compare the energy ratings on types of appliances (dishwasher, fridge, deep fridge, stove) (4 marks) (hint: www.sears.ca)
- Research different energy efficient windows and doors (4 marks)
Create a report to convert your home to include Alternative Energy Sources:
- List improvements that you can make to improve the energy efficiency of your home. (5 marks)
- Research the rules and regulations for the types of alternative energy solutions you are suggesting. (2 marks)
- Research examples of local, national and international alternatives to energy efficient homes (10 marks)
Solar Panel
- Research the two hazards of the mechanical energy, electrical hazards and thermal hazards of solar power: (6 marks)
- Students must create a timeline that highlights the history of the design and use of solar cells. The timeline must have appropriate descriptions for each step. (4 marks)
- Describe common usages for solar cell technology in Newfoundland and Labrador. (4 marks)

Wind Power
- Research the two hazards of the mechanical energy, electrical hazards and thermal hazards of wind power: (6 marks)
- Explain how Wind Turbine create energy output (10 marks)
- Research and describe examples of wind turbines in Newfoundland and Labrador (6 marks)
- Explain what wind sitting considerations are. Provide an example where a wind turbine in Newfoundland is not feasible and why. (3 marks)
