Wood Lathe
1. Operate only with the instructor's permission and after you have received instruction.
2. Remove jewelry, eliminate loose clothing, confine long hair and do not wear gloves.
3. Make sure all guards are in place and operating properly.
4. Always use proper eye protection.
5. All materials should be inspected for defects such as warps, knots and foreign objects.
6. Make all adjustments with the power off.
7. Exam workpiece for flaws and test glue joints before mounting.
8. Rough cut workpiece as close as possible to the finished shape before installing it on the faceplate.
9. Securely fasten the workpiece to the faceplate prior to turning and adjust the tool rest so it is as close to the workpiece as possible. (within 12mm, if possible)
10. When adjusting the speed of the lathe remember, “the harder the stock the slower the speed”.
11. Tighten all clamp locking handles before operating and rotate the workpiece by hand to check clearance before turning on machine.
12. Move the cutting tool into the workpiece slowly and cut small amounts when roughing.
13. When sanding or finishing remove the tool rest.
14. Turn off lathe, wait for the machine to come to a complete stop and clean up workspace
15. Hold the chisel close to each end, not in the middle. Your front hand should control the cut by riding against the tool rest. Your backhand should steady the chisel by holding the butt against your hip.
16. The user should set the drive center into the workpiece with a soft mallet prior to installing it on the headstock.
